Welcome, everyone, to the fourth dance in our series, hosted by Loonie Lunch and the Orillia Big Band, right here in the original Maple Leaf Club ballroom. Let's give a round of applause for the fine musicians of the OBB
This room holds significant history. During the war, Orillia hosted 1,200 recruits at the large Camp 26, situated around Brant Street, Park Street, Belmoral Drive, Collegiate Drive, Martin Drive, and June Drive.
The Maple Leaf Club, where we're gathered, was a haven for these young soldiers, a place to write home (pointing upstairs) and dance with local volunteers on weekends. Weekly dances here drew over 100 men, supervised by their senior officers.
St. James' Loonie Lunch, much like the Maple Leaf Club, is a haven of safety and comfort, offering an affordable lunch every Wednesday at 10:00 am. Serving 75 to 100 people weekly, it's supported by local businesses and dedicated volunteers. Today's funds will help buy ingredients for our homemade soup.
Additionally, Loonie Lunch patrons benefit from the Sharing Place Food Program, which provides ready-made frozen meals at no cost.
Guests are also welcome to visit Penny Wise, located within the church.
